What makes a good title sequence ? Kyle Cooper

Kyle Cooper is well known for making and directing the title sequences to films such as  Dawn of the Dead and The Spiderman films but his most famous work is the title sequence to Se7en. The title sequence for Se7en is very unique , it looks worn out , messy and handwritten. Kyle Cooper mentions that the title sequence  plays a really important role to creating the atmosphere for the film and the overall theme. It gives the audience a sense of mystery which they start  to question why is he writing and who he is.

Kyle Cooper believes that in order to create a good title sequence , you must first set an expectation as to what the movie will be about and the quality of the movie. He also believes that a good title sequence should go seamlessly into the film . Not to forget it should always make the audience excited to watch the film! The font used in the title sequence is also important as it helps with the tone and resonates the film.

Some of Kyle Cooper favourite title sequence that made an impression on him include Deadzone and To Kill A Mockingbird .

  • Deadzone made a great impression on Kyle Cooper with the well used typography. He found the mysterious music great but also the whole title sequence. He also mentioned that Deadzone was quite important as it raised interest in typography for him and the way it can be used.
  • The title sequence of To Kill A Mockingbird Kyle Copper describes it as beautifully photographed. He mentions that the form of lines are used well , and that the props are placed carefully in relation to typography.

Audience

An audience test screening is a preview of a film before it is released , the porpoise of it is to see the reactions of audience. However there is some problems that the studio may fave for example after the screening test , some audience may dislike particular parts , however sometimes to reshoot a specific scene may be too expensive. Furthermore some of the audience may not understand certain parts or aspects of the film which result in the film company having to remove or change specific scenes.

The 2 and a half minutes is important for studios because it helps them to put in the missing information or adjust some parts of the film in order to make it clearer to the audience. It gives film makers a chance to go back and improve or add in the missing information and even change the ending if some of the audience are unsatisfied.

Why does Kyle Cooper think title sequences are so important to a film?
  • Title sequences are used at the very beginning of the film to add certain aspects and scenes of the film to the main plot that may not have been made clear in the  film itself.
  • It puts the audience where they need to be in the film in order not to confuse them and keep the film clear.
What do we expect to see in a films opening title sequence ?

In a good film opening sequence we expect the movie to catch our attention straight away , in order to keep us watching it . It should attract audience straight away.

In Black Swan , a really interesting opening is used which we can definitely say attracts audience by the mystery. A really interesting contrast is used as it shows ballet dancer dancing in white , which we can link that to pureness , however as the video progresses , the music starts to get more dramatic and intense. Blood starts splattering , we can see elements of sinister. The dance is out of focus and the blood and writing is in focus , so the purpose of the whole video is to carry a title, and show the theme of the movie which is a thriller , and elements of sinister.

The second movie with an excellent film opening sequence is Stepfather. The sequence starts with the narrate of the movie. At the start it shows Brad Pitt's name , as this helps the movie to sell a lot as he is a famous actor so many people watch the movie because he is part of the cast. The sequence starts right into the movies plot . The movie is a thriller. The movie uses contrapuntal  sound , as while dead bodies are shown 'silent night' is played which is considered a Christmas carol and a very pure song. So this makes the opening sequence even more creepy. During the beginning of the opening sequence , shaving tools are shown which are organised in a rather very perfect way , which kind of makes the audience think that the man has some sort of OCD , which we can later see that there is dead bodies and that the man is indeed not in his right mind. This opening sequence makes audience question the opening many times , which is very effective at involving audience.

I choose group 1 as my favourite title sequence as they really demonstrated excellent acting as well as amazing editing. They used variety of different shots which made the whole video look much more natural also they used different filters , which emphasised the theme of mystery and horror. I also loved the sound effects and the background music which made the whole video into one piece making it flow and giving it more of horror and mystery theme . They used variety of locations to film which made it even better as they have demonstrated their dedication as well as made the whole video overall look realistic.
Group 30

My favourite group blog is group 30 , as they really demonstrated their knowledge they have learned through media. They didn't  only just use videos or write simple blogs , they used variety of different things such as pictures , gifs , videos. Also they used different programs to answer questions such as prezi and emaze . Which is why I like their work as it shows dedication. Also their posts are well thought out and not rushed through as well as their theme is very eye catching and stands out.

What do we expect to see in a Films Opening Title Sequence?

In a good title sequence we want to see scenes that will hook you to watch the rest of the movie and that make want to do nothing but watch it in that moment.

In  Black Swan the title sequence starts off with the colour pink, calm music and a ballet dancer, which represents purity, however  the music starts getting more and more intense while the sequence continues. the ballet dancer starts splashing paint/blood on the screen while getting more aggressive. this makes a twist. the dancer is also never shown fully which creates a mystery and we want to find out who she is and why is she acting that way? The contrast is strong between purity and sin as the blood/paint that's being splashes represents it.

another movie with a very good opening sequence is Step Father. The sequence starts off by showing Brad Pitt's name. This will bring make the movie sell a lot because he is a famous actor and people will watch it just because he is in it. The movie starts off with a man that is unusually minded, has everything lined up as if he has ocd. there are a lot of red objects that could represent love, death, or Christmas. The sequence creator has used contrapuntal sound to play 'silent night' in the background which then contrasts with the dead bodies that we see laying around the mans house. The film also shows a shot of the happy frame pictures the family has in their home, so it leaves us with a questioned mind of why is there bloody weapons and dead family members if everything was fine?

Personally I think set 1 group 3 has the best blog and this is because they designed the blog with a bloody background to fit with their genre and this sets the mood   for the people who look at their blog and they will want to see more. they also used a lot of social media to upload their videos. The girls didn't only post videos but they also posted pictures and gifs to present. They have layed out everything step by step and showed how their work is developed over time. Each individual from the group has contributed evenly and they all show they're work in detail.

I chose this title sequence as my favorite one because their idea is something that happens in the streets of London everyday.A lot of young boys loose their life and i think it is really powerful and it really hits the audience. they also were very smart with the props they used, when using a camera battery as a gun. They showed which character was in power due to the end by angling the camera up awards the character to show that he is the one taking over. The editing matched the there because they added a lot of flashing for the scenes that could of been a bit of explicit. the flashing as also in red to represent blood/death. they used a dark setting of night streets and that is suitable for their idea because a lot of crime happens when it gets dark and streets is a great example of gangs and crime.
