The importance of sound in film

Sound is used in film to establish tone , atmosphere and to help give the audience clues about the plot , characters or to identify the genre of the film. It is also used to help suspend disbelief to create realism for the viewers and heighten their experience of the film .

George Lukas  , director of the Star Wars franchise , argues that sound is 50%. In other words without sound you would only get half the good experience of the film , which I agree with because from my analysis I have concluded that sound creates atmosphere and sets the tone but also gives clues. With sound the movie seems much more realistic.

Key words

  • sound - a sound or noise which is produced by continuous and regular vibrations.
  • soundscape - a piece of music which is made up of many aspects of sound
  • sound design - it is the process of specifying , manipulating or generating audio elements.

Diegetic and Non Diegetic sound and what difference it makes .
